The "Who Cares" Tugboat of Payette Lake
The Story
Jay R. Benford, Designer
The story goes that my my dad, Bob Parsons (or Cap'n Bob) and his good friend, Con Christiansen bought the boat in Friday Harbor, WA. Con and his wife cruised around the Sound for a week or two and used it as an R.V.
It was then trailered and brought to Payette Lake in McCall where it has been the subject of many photos, some book covers, and many endearing smiles since about 1985. Powered by a single cylinder Yanmar deisel engine, The Who Cares has provided the familiar back-beat of summer on the lake with it's 'patooka, patooka, patooka.' Bob and Lola sold the boat to John and Lisa Wood in 2000 or so. Being family members we say we are still the second owners of the tug.
The Who Cares hull is one of a run of six manufactured in Maryland and then brought out west: three to become Tugs, and three that were made into Cat Rigged sailboats.
It is time for the Who Cares to find another familly and spend lazy summer days back on the water on Payette Lake engaged in cocktail cruises, picnic outings, and the occasional pirate raid.
According to the initial registration, it was built in 1980 and designed by Jay Benford.
Specifications
The engine is a 20" 1 cycle Yanmar Diesel. It has a depth finder, VHF radio, dinette, compass, sink and gas stove. It is outfitted with a padded bench that would double as a bed. Trailer is included.
